Oaks Odds
The Oaks odds changed dramatically today as race goers saw a genuine filly take the field in the Musidora Stakes at York. That filly was the Jim Bolger trained, Lush Lashes, who was far too good for what was thought to be a quality field. She took the lead a couple of furlongs from the line and quickened away in highly impressive style. Jockey Kevin Manning was a delighted with her performance but would not be drawn into whether she would go for the Epsom Oaks or the Irish version.
Bookmakers were taking no chances however and they have immediately promoted her to Oaks favouritism and she is now as short as 9/4 with most. Lush Lashes only ran 11 days ago in the Stan James 2000 guineas and was a very fast finishing 6th to flying French Filly, Natagora, It was clear then that she needed further and she proved that right in emphatic style today over the 10 furlongs in the Musidora.
Asked whether she would get the mile and half, Manning said “no problem”, and it was clear he meant what he said!
Lush Lashes had gone off 2/1 favourite, but there was money for several of the fillies’, Moonstone, for instance, trained by Aiden O’Brien, was also a big fancy, but faltered in the final two furlongs, but O’Brien will be encouraged to see that she picked herself up again and was staying on really well at the end. She would clearly get the Oaks distance and should not be discounted. O’Brien is famed for bringing his horses on slow and surely and Moonstone will certainly improve in the race. Dar Re Mi, who had been Oaks favourite finished third. Cape Amber, trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam and ridden by Jamie Spencer finished a creditable second.
