It will come as no surprise to learn that Tony Martin has the one at the head of the betting in Royal County Star at around the 13/2 mark in one of the most competitive races of the Irish National hunt season. Next in are both Cailin Alainn and Old Benny both at 8/1. Old Benny must recover from his Cheltenham festival success where he won the National Hunt Chase on the first day for the in form trainer Alan King.

The favourite Royal County Star was disappointing in his last race over an inadequate trip but his previous run in the Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan in November shoed his potential. Getting a great ride from Robbie Colgan he was held up well off the pace, he began to close before the fourth last and was travelling strongly just behind the leaders three out. He did make a very bad mistake at the second last but he was quickly back on an even keel and jumped the final fence better than his nearest rival and forged to the front up the hill.

This ability to make a bad error is cause for concern amongst his followers in a race like the Irish National but he has loads of class.
