The ever impressive New England Patriots stretched their unbeaten run to 18 games for the season as they overcame a resilient San Diego Chargers side 21-12 at the Gillette Stadium. Two touchdown passes from Tom Brady to Wes Welker and Jabar Gaffney, plus a one yard rush in to the end zone from Laurence Maroney was enough for the ‘Perfect Patriots’ to remain unbeaten for the season, a run which now stretches an impressive 18 games. Victory at Superbowl would see the New England Patriots equal the unbeaten record set by the Miami Dolphins when they won the Superbowl in 1973. However, given the extra games and the manner in which the Patriots have gone about their business this season, it is likely that they will be handed the accolade of the greatest ever franchise in the history of the NFL if they do win Superbowl.

The New York Giants will be determined to upset the Patriots party at Superbowl. Throughout the post-season play offs, the Giants have shown great character to progress through three road games to reach Superbowl and despite it being a well used phrase in the media, Giants Quarter Back, Eli Manning, has certainly come of age in the past three games, but the Giants offensive line has been equally impressive as too have their defense. Such spirit of the Giants team was evident during the NFC Championship game when they beat the Green Bay Packers in overtime. Tied at 20-20 after four quarters, Green Bay won the toss and were driving down the field before Giants cornerback Corey Webster intercepted a Brett Favre pass, which allowed the Giants to move the ball in to field goal range. Giants kicker, Lawrence Tynes, had already missed two field goal attempts, including one in the last seconds of regular time so to step up in overtime and score the winning points from 47 yards showed great courage, something that the Giants are sure to take with them to Superbowl

The New England Patriots are favourites to win the Superbowl following their record breaking Week 17 victory over the New York Giants at Giants Stadium less than a month ago. On that occasion, the Patriots won what was a very close game 38-35, and a repeat performance by both sides would make for a thrilling Superbowl. The Patriots are aiming to make it four Superbowl titles in just six years, whilst the Giants will be looking to win the Vince Lombardi trophy for the first time since 1991 in what is their first Superbowl appearance since 2001, when they were convincingly beaten by the Baltimore Ravens.
