The Superbowl Odds for the 2008 NFL season have taken many twists and turns upto the end of week 12 from big pre season favourites, the New England Patriots, taking a long walk in betting as a result of a season ending injury to Quarterback, Tom Brady, through to the emergence of surprise package, the Tennessee Titans, who have lost just once all season.
With just five games remaining, there are sure to be many more shifts in the betting over the coming weeks. This coming Thursday's Thanksgiving games signal what is considered to be the start of the final run and crunch time for teams with ambitions of making it to Superbowl 43 in Tampa Bay on 1st February 2009.
All 32 NFL teams have just five games remaining in the season and of those, 20 still have a realistic chance of making it to the Play Offs. The New York Giants currently head the odds and are the 11/4 favoruites to win back to back Superbowls with bookmaker Paddypower.
The Giants emerged as last season's surprise package when it came to the post season, winning three road games to reach the Superbowl, but this year they are on course to secure home field advantage, surrently leading the NFC with a 10-1 record. Once again, they look strong on both sides of the ball and last year's experience is sure to be invaluable and they are very much the team to beat.
In the AFC, Tennessee lead the way as 7/1 Superbowl favourites and also at 10-1 for the season they look likely to claim home advantage in the Play Offs. After a 10-0 start, the Titans suffered a surprise 34-13 home defeat at the hands of a rejuvenated New York Jets side, lead by the seemingly unstoppable Brett Favre. Despite his advancing years, he has lead the Jets to the top of the AFC East and on course for the Play Offs, the Jets are 12/1 to win the Superbowl and Ladbrokes are offering the same odds that both New York teams meet at Superbowl XLIII.
Other teams who are worth noting are the Indianapolis Colts, champions two years ago and while they haven't recaptured the form of 2006, they have rediscovered winning ways and will be a match for anyone should they make the Play Offs.
The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots are two other sides who have begun to show the type of form that had them at the at the top of the betting at the start of the season. The Cowboys are 7-4 and must continue winning if they are to make the Post Season, falling to four straigh defeats recently which coincided with an injury to Quarterback, Tony Romo, now back fit, they are now back to winning ways and should not be discounted.
Similarly, the New England Patriots have needed time to adjust to the news that Tom Brady will not be back until next season but in recent weeks, stand in Quarterback, Matt Cassell, has really begun to show that he is every bit a starter in the NFL. If Cassell can continue the type of form shown when throwing for 415 yards and three touchdowns in the Pats recent win over the Dolphins, together with an ever improving Defence, the pats could make it five Superbowl appearances in eight seasons.
