Saturday's crucial clash pits Alex McLeish's plucky pretenders against world champions Italy with Roberto Donadoni's experienced squad expected to play party-poopers and leapfrog the Scots. Insistent Italy have not given up the chase where lesser opponents may have, and after winning seven out of the last eight – slipping up only with a respectable stalemate in Paris – the resurgent roman warriors come to Hampden as 11/10 favourites to take all three points and the second group qualification place. Plucky Scotland have held their own against the two world cup finalists in their group of death, but having played a game extra hold only a one point lead over third-placed Italy, requiring victory on Saturday to be sure of making it to Austria and Switzerland for next year's championship. The prospect of making it to a competitive tournament for the first time since France 98 has buoyed McLeish's men to an unthought-of double over France, but a sloppy away performance in Georgia saw three points dropped – and form dented before the weekend's key clash. At 11/4, many still favour the Scots to steal the show, but the more likely prospect of honours even (2/1) may not even be enough.
Odds are short (6/1) on an efficient 2-0 Italian job, with scorers not in short supply for Donadoni. A wealth of venerable veterans has been spurned by the manager – such is the font of forward talent in Italy. Again overlooking Alessandro Del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi, the controversial coach favoured the in-form Alberto Gilardino while Vincenzo Iaquinta was also fit and in the squad, alongside versatile winger-come-forward Palladino, whose Juventus form makes him a likely threat to the Scottish defence. Meanwhile, Scotland were given 6/1 chances of holding the lead at both half-time and full-time, with rock-like midfielder Scott Brown back from a bad tackle and boosting Scottish hopes of holding the Italians at bay in both halves. Strikers Kenny Miller and Garry O'Connor are also available for McLeish, getting the better of groin injuries and adding to the manager's up-field options.
