Following last season's thrilling rise from lower mid-table of the Championship to automatic promotion under Roy Keane, Sunderland have the honour of hosting the first live match of the new Premiership season. Expectations are very high at the Stadium of Light following Keane's remarkable start to life as a manager, and Black Cats fans will see a very different side this season after a summer of feverish activity in the transfer market. In have come Kieran Richardson, Michael Chopra, Paul McShane, Dickson Etuhu, Russell Anderson and Greg Halford, with 5 players departing the Wearside club, though last Saturday's 1-1 draw with a strong Juventus side suggests that Keane's new-look side are beginning to gel. Sunderland currently have no injury or suspension concerns ahead of Tottenham's visit, and following the woeful season they endured last time they were in the top-flight, they will realise the importance of a good start to their campaign.
Martin Jol has lead his Tottenham side to 5th-placed finishes in each of the last 2 Premiership seasons, and after investing heavily in new talent this summer he will be hoping to go one better and claim one of the crucial Champions League spots this time around. Spurs have been in red-hot form during the close-season, winning 7 games since July 7th and banging in 17 goals in the process, with new signing Darren Bent and fellow strikers Jermaine Defoe, Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov all amongst the goals - an ominous sign for the Sunderland defence. One new player Spurs fans are unlikely to get a look at is left-back Gareth Bale who is struggling with a thigh strain, whilst Lee Young-Pyo and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are also doubtful, leaving Spurs with a potential problem in the full-back position. Tottenham certainly have the quality to get their campaign off to a flying start here, and they are sure to be well backed at 6/5 against a Sunderland side who at the moment are an unknown quantity at this level.
