Manchester United have certainly not rested on their laurels after last season’s breath-taking assault on the Premiership, though United fans may have to wait for their first look at new signings Nani and Anderson, with both looking unlikely to start here. Their other major summer singing, Owen Hargreaves, has been struggling with injury and is likely to play in a low-key friendly this weekend and sit this one out, whilst Scholes, Saha and Park Ji-Sung are all suffering knee injuries. Having excelled at Watford for the last 2 years, Ben Foster is cruelly denied an opportunity to shine for United here, and the talented young ‘keeper will be out until December after a training ground injury.
Much has been made of Chelsea's lack of spending this summer, with Florent Malouda the only player costing them a transfer fee as Sidwell, Ben Haim and Pizarro have all come in to boost the squad on free transfers. A quieter, less confrontational Jose Mourinho has also begun to emerge in recent times, and as his rift with Roman Abramovich seems to have finally been healed, Chelsea look well placed to take their Premiership title back from United this season. Despite last season’s disappointments, the Blues certainly made a good start at the new Wembley, winning the FA Cup there against the Red Devils, and Mourinho will recognise the importance of landing another blow in this one. Wayne Bridge and Michael Ballack and the only injury concerns ahead of this fixture, whilst the constant speculation surrounding Arjen Robben’s future means he could well miss out as Mourinho plans for life after his departure. Blues fans will no doubt be eager to see Florent Malouda come in for Robben on the left of Chelsea’s midfield, and his pace and flair will certainly pose problems for the United defence is he does play. Given Mourinho’s record in cup finals and one-off matches as Chelsea boss, his side look marginally the better value with both sides starting at 6/4.
