The University boat race is run every year around the end of March/early April along the River Thames and is something of a British institution. Regardless of it's heritage, upwards of nine million people watch the race live on TV each year and an estimated quarter of a million people watch the race from the banks of the River Thames.
The first race between the two universities was in 1829 but it didn't become an annual event until 1856. Both teams are known as the Blues, with Cambridge donning light blue colours and Oxford dark blue.
The course for the Varsity boat race is four miles and 374 yards long (6,779m) and starts at Chiswick Bridge and ends at Putney Bridge, passing beneath the Barnes Railway Bridge and Hammersmith Bridge as it weaves around through south west London.
Although not traditionally a betting event, bookmakers offer odds on the race each year with plenty of people having a punt on the outcome. As well as betting on who will win the race punters can bet on the winning margin, whether a new record time will be set and of course whether a boat will sink!
