At the beginning of every Year the Movie World embarks on a round of Awards Ceremonies to celebrate and promote the films produced in the previous year. Massive marketing and publicity budgets are spent and incessant rounds of Celebrity Interviews are given to help secure the most coveted prizes. Success in the main awards guarantees further revenue for the film and further career opportunities for those involved in front of and behind the camera lens.

The Award Show Season kicks off with The Golden Globes presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the results of which are usually seen as a major pointer to success in the main event, The Oscars. First held in 1944 at the 20th Century Fox Studios, there are sixteen categories covering films from both the U.S and internationally and eleven awards for television. Meryl Streep holds the record for most Golden Globes, with a collection of seven to her name. After the Golden Globes, The Baftas Award show is held in the UK. The British Academy of Film And Television Arts declares its intention as one that ”supports, develops and promotes the art forms of the moving image, by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public” and likes to see itself as less influenced by the Hollywood Movie Machine than other Awards Ceremonies. For this reason those films that succeed at The Golden Globes may not necessarily achieve the same status with the British critics.

Inevitably, whilst an Art form, the movie industry is still subject to the same balance- sheet driven ethics as any other commercial enterprise. To maintain itself as an industry perceived success in any of the Awards Shows is fiercely pursued and none more than the coveted Oscars which is recognized by potential viewers as the ultimate mark of excellence and as it is so competitve the online bookmakers set out their Specials Bets for the film and music awards.

The first Academy Awards were held in 1929 to honour outstanding film achievement and was hosted by Douglas Fairbanks and William C deMille and subsequently the hosting of the show has been seen as a hugely honoured role. 2012 will see the 85th edition of the Academy Awards whose rules simply state that a film must open in the previous calendar year, from midnight at the start of January 1 to midnight at the end of December 31, in Los Angeles County California, and that a film must be feature-length, defined as a minimum of 40 minutes, except for short subject awards. Probably the most glamorous event in the calendar, betting opportunities are rife and can include side bets of which dress designer will dress which celebrity as well as the main event.

Bookmakers are taking bets on each award up for grabs at the 2012 Oscars which are held on Sunday 26th February in Los Angeles. Awards such as the best picture, best actor/actress and best director dominate all the headlines but there are quite often gambles to be landed in the lesser known categories such as best animated film and best foreign language.

The King's Speech took the majority of awards at the 2011 Oscars, winning best picture and best director as well as a best actor award for Colin Firth. Natalie Portman won the best actress award from here role in the Black Swan, whilst Melissa Leo and Christian Bale scooped the best supporting actor roles for their parts in The Fighter.
