‘Britain’s Got Talent’ launched in 2007 and will begin its sixth series in April. Under the careful direction of Simon Cowell, he with the Midas Touch, it has become one of the nation’s favourite reality TV shows and is favourite this year to pick up a BAFTA for Best Entertainment programme, pipping its sister programme ‘The X Factor ‘ to the post. Auditions are held throughout the country with contestants displaying a whole range of variety acts.
Much in the same way as early rounds of the X Factor can be excruciating, as individuals warble and croak through a song believing they are the next Whitney Houston, the early rounds of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ televises some very deluded individuals who think their performance would be appropriate for royal viewing. The winner of the show earns the right to perform at The Royal Varity Show and inevitably has a stepping stone to launch a show biz career.
The judges for the recent series were Michael McIntyre, David Hasselhoff and Amanda Holden with Simon Cowell pitching in at the live shows. However, the 2012 shows werejudged by Cowell, Holden, David Walliams and Alesha Dixon.
The first winner Paul Potts a tenor who now performs internationally, the second George Sampson a remarkably talented 12 year old street dancer, the third, dance group Diversity have all sustained their fame and popularity.
The biggest phenomena so far was in 2009 when Susan Boyle, a 48 year old Scots woman with learning difficulties took to the stage and dazzled with her rendition of ‘I dream a dream’, from Les Miserables. Her fame spread with alarm, commanding the attention of the world’s press, an interview on the Oprah Winfrey show and the support of Hollywood actress Demi Moore. Whilst she only came second in the show, that was probably more of a reflection of British audiences sense of fairplay. With the world at her doorstep she no longer needed the show to launch her dream, Diversity on the other hand would benefit from the title.
