The X Factor has been on our screens for two weeks now, working its way through the long Summer audition process with its usual array of misguided delusional individuals, but the gems of talent are, thankfully, bubbling to the surface. Bookmakers Paddy Power, in their X Factor Betting Market, are clearly aware of the audience's reception of Mary Byrne, who really seems to have ignited the new series and is now 6/1 favourite to win the show.
Simon Cowell looked relieved at Irish woman Mary Byrne's appearance on Saturday night and reassured that his Midas touch was still drawing out marketable contestants. Each series requires a character to launch the PR and marketing machine to ensure high viewing figures throughout the three month run, and Byrne has already offered such an opportunity. Human interest is key to the tabloids picking up an X Factor story and 50 year old Mary who works on the till at Tesco echoing Susan Boyles profile is catching the imagination of the red top journos.

Last week the audience was wowed by 18 year old Gamu Nhengu, whose voice was not only better, but also more commercial than Mary's, although the controversy surrounding the use of auto tune technology has cast doubt in the minds of some about her talent. Reports suggest that the engineer responsible was sacked by Cowell and the circumstances will not be repeated, although in X factor any publicity is good publicity as demonstrated by tuneless brothers Jedward last year, so Cowell's ire will surely be temporary.
As the X Factor Soap Opera unfolds over the next three months, be assured that more talent will emerge and there will be other front runners who will challenge this week's big story. Judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Louis Walsh and the soon to return Dannii Minogue will be casting eagerly around to spy opportunities in groups other than Female Soloists to ensure a chance of mentoring the winning act. Byrne and Nhengu look set to go a long way in the programme but others are sure to emerge to challenge them. Nhengu has reportedly backed out of X factor auditions on four ocassions through nerves so her ability to stand the months of pressure ahead is already in question.
