So You Think You Can Dance is finally in the home straight, Arlene Phillips ebullience continues, Cisco clamours as much for the limelight before he Louise Rednapp and Nigel Lythgoe fade back into the wallpaper with little value added to their cv's. As became apparent this week with the sacking/resignation of Cheryl Cole from the American version of X Factor, the chemistry and strength of the judging panels in these reality shows is paramount and is a significant cause of SYTYCD failing to capture the audiences of similar programmes. Paddy Power continue to favour Matt at odds of 5/6 to win and unfortunately for the producers they look to have had it right from the outset.
Skating On Ice and even the X Factor started with favourites who eventually went on to win, but the fact that the likes of Matt Cardle had real competition in the latter stages made the viewing altogether more compelling. Katie at odds of 5/2 would appear to be close on Matt's shoulder, but the clamour of the judges for Matt and the nature of the format makes his enthronment look a near certainty.
Of course there is always the possibility that injury will tamper with the outcome and is of course a real possibility in such a physical discipline, but the remaining contestants are professional athletes unlikely to pull a muscle or twist an ankle in the way that celebrities could on Strictly Come Dancing or Skating On Ice and frankly if Anne Widdecombe managed to stay injury free with her level of fitness whilst careering around the dancefloor then the contenders on this show look pretty safe.
Unfortunately whilst for the competitors the experience is undoubtedly life changing and extraordinary, the viewing experience is neither of these things, which means that however passionate Arlene becomes the show simply does not induce the same excitement as the other megaliths of reality TV. Has anyone ever heard of the dancers who have won this show after the event, are the tabloids peppered with tales of the dancers on and off screen? The answer is a resounding No. Tabloid column inches feed on public interest which they fish in a desire to fuel their own revenue, So You Think You Can Dance clearly does not serve them in this way. Matt looks likely to experience a real personal triumph so he better enjoy it, it seems unlikely it will forge him as lucrative a future as other reality supremos.
