Reality TvVmust be quieter than usual in the UK for bookmakers Paddy Power to draw on an American market to sustain its novelty betting and placate its novelty punters. However, there is method in their madness as ever, whilst 'The Voice' will only be in its second season, it has been so popular in the States that the viewing figures for the first series topped those of the phenomena 'Glee'and 'Dancing With The Stars'. Clearly if 'The Voice' can compete with such high profile television on the other side of the pond, it is almost guaranteed success in this country. Paddy Power are tapping into a new resource and consequently offering a market on who will present the programme on its second outing.
Interestingly the list is inundated with names of British stars with Dermot O'Leary heading the odds as 8/1 favourite. Supposedly the reason that the list is fashioned in this way is that it is anticipated that if the show is to truly make the transition across to the UK then viewers will feel more at ease on their sofas with a familiar face and more willing to accept a dose of the USA. O Leary is of course very well versed in the world of presenting, starting on Big Brother and more recently finding a solid place as presenter of The X Factor. This exposure not only makes him very well known at home but also abroad where the X Factor is also aired.
It was reported that he was about to launch himself in America by following Cheryl Cole onto the US version of the X Factor, but it soon became clear that he, along with his geordie pal, were unsuccessful. With the ratings of The Voice going through the roof, O Leary would be more than happy to forsake the X Factor for such an opportunity and may be well advised to jump aboard a new show than stick with a well worn and some might argue tired format.
The Voice comes from a show developed in the Netherlands and consists of three phases a blind audition, a battle phase, and live performance shows. Four judges/coaches, all famous musicians, will choose teams of contestants through a blind audition process, then each judge has the length of the performance to decide if he or she wants that singer on his or her team; if two or more judges want the same singer, then the singer gets the final choice of coach. Its an interesting set up which provides drama from the get-go, especially when those judging include the likes of Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton. Had this policy been adopted on the X Factor, the broadcasted skermishes between Louis Walsh, Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue would have been riveting!
