Snooker legend Alex Higgins died this week, after his well documented decline into ill health, which saw the once vital personality, famous for his alcoholic binges and hedonistic lifestyle, reduced to a shadow of himself as he became ravaged by throat cancer. His life story is certainly one that would lend itself to a biopic, so it is no surprise that the question,'Who will play Hurricane Higgins in the movie?', is already being asked. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is favourite at 6/1 with online bookmakers Paddy Power to fill the role.
Higgins, whose nickname 'Hurricane ' derived from the speed and stealth with which he negotiated the green baize, was also fondly remembered as 'The People's Champion', having risen from humble beginnings to take the quiet and reserved world of snooker by storm. His exhuberant play and demeanour endeared him to the 'man on the street', and throughout his playing career his fans were notoriously and appropriately voluble and loyal.

For the People's Champion to die at 61, adds the perfect tragic ending to the life of a flawed genius with such legendary charisma , and must surely be energizing many scriptwriters pens and producers casting books to chase the potential pot of gold. It is hard to imagine the role of a man who was so intrinsically Northern Irish, being captured by the likes of Hollywood's golden boys Leonardo DiCaprio at 33/1 or Brad Pitt at the same odds, although it would not be out of the realm of Johnny Depp, whose portrayal of Captain Jack in the 'Pirates Of The Carribean' series may already have touched upon some elements of Higgins' character.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers' name may well have bobbed to the surface in this scenario because whilst not a northerner, he does hail from the Emerald Isle and as a young star on the rise, capable of edgy performances could guarantee box office interest if the script was a good one. Whoever does land the role , if a film does go into production, if indeed a scriptwriter is found, it can be a certainty that Hugh Grant, at 100/1, will not be starring. Alex Higgins certainly had a playful nature and enjoyed a laugh, but for him to be played by Grant would be just too ludicrous even for The People's Champion!!
