Two more episodes of Popstar to Operastar to go and more's the pity, although ranking lower than most celebrity centric reality TV shows, it certainly has more credibility and entertainment value than most and with the reality TV world in a bit of a lull, agood chance for the novelty betting punter to pit their wits against the British public. I say pit their wits against the public rather than the judges, for whilst the judging panel works well with a combination of expertise, in the form of Vallazon and Katherine Jenkins and the added depth of Vanessa Mae and Simon Callow, as any follower of Reality TVknows it is not the opinion of the judges that finally decides the outcome. Bookmakers Paddy Power still have Joe Mc Elderry as 4/6 favourite to win after his rendition of Nessun Dorma last night, but is that where the viewers votes will be cast?
It was clear that the bar was raised this week with far more complicated arias being served up to the remaining celebrities and all credit to them that they must have worked long and hard at their task to make any sort of a fist at these pieces. Joe McElderry was visibly nervous at the outset and for good reason. Nessun Dorma has to be one of the most recognizable operatic tunes after its use at Italia 90, and all of the world's greatest tenors including Domingo and Pavorotti have been associated with it. However, whilst clearly not about to take to the stage at Covent garden Joe eased into the performance and as his nerves subsided, left the stage with an impressive rendition for a novice. The judges were appropriately complimentary and there was a standing ovation from the studio, but this does not mean he will walk away with the title.
Of the remaining three celebrities, Joe's greatest competition comes from the women. Claire Richards of Steps has proved to have a fabulous voice and a real penchant for Opera and although nerves caught up with her in week 1, in week 2 her true potential was unveiled. Although her tone is richer and her range broader than Cheryl Baker she looked as though her nerves were once again challenging her fluency this week. Audiences always appreciate the length of someones journey on these shows and both Claire and Cheryl have certainly grown in stature musically since they have been on the programme.
Joe appears to be cruising at the moment, but there is certainly mileage in Claire and Cheryl's talent. Joe could well find the next rise of the bar finds him struggling, unable to move up a gear in his adventure, Claire by comparison could well pull a performance out of the bag that would outshine him if the nerves are kept at bay and her odds of 6/4 could easily shorten. Cheryl, who has always been marketed as the blonde airhead who was entirely at home with lightweight Bucks Fizz has surprised everyone and with her effervescent character and clear humility in this arena is still improving and on the night could just pull one out of the bag and scoop the prize. What does look as certain as these things ever can, is that Joe Washbourn has no chance of going to the end of the programme, so save your money. Hopefully he will enjoy next week's show, it must be his last.
