Tomorrow night the glitziest night in film takes place in Hollywood, the Oscar Award ceremony, and independently funded British moviel The King's Speech is not only breaking box office records but could well challenge British Oscar records with 12 nominations!
After the Golden Globes, often the marker for triumph in Hollywood, The King's Speech has continued to shorten with bookmakers Paddy Power, until Colin Firth now stands at an extraordinary 1/66 to pick up the Best Actor Oscar despite being in the company of some other excellent performances this year. Firth's closest competition comes from Jeff Bridges in the remake of John Wayne classic, True Grit, but having won this trophy last yeat Bridges looks set to be the runner up this time around.
There has been competition from Franco in 127 hours and his ability to maintain interest in the excruciating tale of a climber forced to cut off his own hand has been recognised by many of the critics, but Firth's depiction of George VI's struggle with public life as a chronic stutterer has brought audiences to their feet in cinemas across the capital. Royal story lines have always done well across the pond, as Helen Mirren witnessed with her win in The Queen, a rather average movie in retrospect, but The King's Speech is much more Shakespearean in character and hence worthy of the high praise it is receiving.
The Social Network which is as modern as The King's Speech is archaic, may just have been released a year too soon. It could well pick up the Best Director Oscar with David Fincher, but its strength is in its conception as a whole rather than its individual performances so its central protagonists look unlikely to be rewarded.
The smart money is on Natalie Portman picking up the Best Actress gong for Black Swan, Christian Bale for Best Supporting Actor, Original screenplay and Best Film going to The King's Speech and lets hope Helena Bonham Carter sneaks the Best Supporting Actress award for then we are sure to be in for the best acceptance speech of the evening! In fact establish a Best Acceptance Award and she'd certainly win!
