The end of July is a quiet time for novelty betting, the kids are on their summer holidays, parents are busily constructing ways to sponsor and entertain them at home and abroad and allparties are hoping for good weather. As the government heads towards its summer recess and business anticipates a period of lull many of the novelty betting markets grind to a brief halt. The X Factor hovers on the horizon, the return of Big Brother shimmers like an oasis for the reality TV addicts and bookmakers like Paddy Power scan around for books to keep their punters interested. Should some breaking news about a celebrity hit the headlines their job will be easy but for the moment the pickings are slim.
There are always the old faithfuls to rely on, long term markets on William and Kate, or should I say the Duke and Duchess Of Cornwall, are always there to be scrutinized as well as aspiring royals the Beckhams, and there is also a market on Charlie Sheen as he steps back into the limelight after his well publicized troubles. 'Anger Management' was a Jack Nicholson movie dating back to 2003 and it is reported that Sheen is about to embark on a TV adaptation.
Many observers are amused by the prospect of Sheen playing a character whose therapist is teaching him how to control his temper and improve his social skills, indeed many think that the storyline is so near the knuckle that it is simply a ruse by marketing men to encourage controversy and hence publicity. Paddy Power clearly think enough people will be interested in these column inches to have a book on who will play the therapist to Sheen's wracked therapee.
Rob Lowe is cited as 5/2 favourite for the part, believing that he would be the perfect foil for Sheen's explosiveness. Many in the movie industry have been scathing about Sheen's ability to follow Nicholson's portrayal of the tormented, albeit comic protagonist.
A listers aside, scanning through the markets there is of course still a market on Katie Price. Paddy Power have regularly relied upon the twists and turns of Katie's life to supply a range of novelty books. From her days with Peter Andre, their divorce and her subsequent marriage and divorce of Alex Reid Paddy Power have assessed her draw with their punters as significant. Whilst she has been less visible in the red tops of late Paddy Power clearly feel there is still an opening. Their is a book entitled, 'Who Will Play Katie Price', offering odds on which actress will portray her in a biopic of her life with Amy Childs favourite at 3/1 and Lacey Turner at 5/1. The bookmakers appear to be pitching this market well, after all Meryl Streep is tied up with her portral of Maggie Thatcher at the moment so is unavailable.
