The nominations for Hollywood's showcase, The Oscars, came out yesterday with few surprises. As predicted here on The Betting Directory the prices for the premier gongs are already shortening, after the Golden Globes, so the discerning punter should cast around the many books that are available to spot some value. Fortunately bookmakers Paddy Power have a good choice of markets, where some value is to be had.
Inevitably Meryl Streep is not only nominated for the Best Actress Award, but is a 4/9 favourite to win for her depiction of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady and by the end of February these odds are sure to shorten further. Whilst the BAFTAS will occur before the Main Event, and the British can sometimes reward different talents, they will have little impact on the Academy members in Hollywood who are responsible for the decision. It seems that the word across the pond is that Meryl will finally be celebrating a hatrick of those venerable trophies.
The nominations were led by Martin Scorcese's film Hugo, with 11 possible gongs in sight, but interestingly none of these categories include acting awards. The story of an orphaned boy who lives in a clock in France is regarded as a masterpiece of technique, employing 3D technology, so is expected to sweep the board on this front, much in the same way as Avatar did. Hugo is nominated for Best Picture but at 11/1 is well behind the favourite The Artist at 8/11. The silent movie The Artist has been nominated for 10 Oscars and will definitely be expected to do well, with acting and technical categories covered.
If a punter is prepared to do a little research the value is there to be had. Paddy Power is offering a book on How Many Oscars The Artist will secure and whilst not as obvious as the central markets offers better prices . Paddy Power favours the idea that it will win two awards at odds of 2/1 but looking through the competition in the other categories four trophies seems more likely at odds of 3/1 but there are further considerations to be made when deciding, as we will highlight.
There is another book regarding which film will win the most Oscars which may give a hint that the bookies think that The Artist may actually do even better and could win five Awards which is priced at a tasty 6/1, and that is which film will secure the overall best performance on that prestigious night. Odds of 8/11 says The Artist will triumph on the night with the most prizes, with Hugo at a poor 8/1 behind The Descendants at 9/4 and Moneyball at 10/3.
The novelty punter certainly has a few opportunities in this year's Oscar Betting but a real analysis of the various runners and riders is essential as well as a discerning scan through all the Oscars that are in offer, not just the better known ones. Whilst some of the technical gongs are not of as much interest to the General Public they all count in Paddy Power's markets.
