The annual Boat Race gets underway on Saturday as Cambridge University takes on Oxford University for the 157th time around 'The Championship Course' from Putney to Mortlake, taking in Hammersmith and Barnes along the way. Defending champions Cambridge are 4/9 odds on favourites with William Hill bookmakers, with Oxford available at industry best priced odds of 13/8 after strong support during the past week.
First run in 1829, the Boat Race has become something of a national institution and it is as competitive as ever. Both teams are known as the 'Blues', with Cambridge in light blue and Oxford in dark blue. The light blues have certainly had an eventful build up to this year's race as they trained with Royal Marines as part of their preparation in September, nearly crashed with students on the River Thames on Wednesday and have broken with tradition by using a different boat (a Hudson) for the first time since 1981.
The Cambridge crew are on average a quarter of a pound heavier than Oxford and they go in as strong favourites in what are expected to be fast conditions on the River Thames. Calm water conditions should support a fast race time and it could be worth a look at the all time record Boat Race time being broken this weekend. WilliamHill.com offer odds of 8/1 that the 16 minute 19 second race time set in 1998 is broken, and only Oxford in 2005 have come close to that in recent times when they clocked 16 minutes 42 seconds.
William Hill also offers industry best priced odds of 33/1 for either of the boats to sink on Saturday, something that hasn't occurred since 1978.
Oxford meanwhile will be looking to regain the title they lost last year and boast the talent of Constantine Louloudis, who has been tipped to be part of Britain's 2012 Olympics crew. It all looks set to be a close race and a draw is currently available at odds of 33/1 with Hills. Of the 156 races so far a 'dead heat' has only ever occurred once, back in 1877, with Cambridge winning 80 and Oxford 75 overall.
Hills also offer a market for the winning margin in the race, with over three lengths currently priced evens, under 2 lengths available at 5/2, and between two and three lengths can be backed at odds of 9/4. It promises to be an exciting affair and the cox of the winning team will no doubt be in store for the traditional dunking in the Thames come the end of the race.
