Betting On A White Christmas: 5/2 Snow In London On Christmas Day!

We are not yet in December and the UK has the first real hint of snow on its way at the end of the week. As usual when the white stuff threatens to arrive the issue bubbles up to grab the headlines. After last year's record breaking winter and the accompanying tales of communities cut off and power lines down, it is hardly surprising that journalists media wide, are finding column inches to write. Accordingly, bookmakers Paddy Power have openend a book on the subject so that betting on a white Christmas is a possibility. In fact the bookies give London a 5/2 chance to be White on Christmas Day this year.

As temperatures have dropped this week to an unseasonal low, winds from the east threaten to decrease them further and with that set of circumstances it seems that the north east and east of the UK can expect a bit more than a sprinkling of snow at the weekend. If the bookies had a market on whether there would be any snow this winter the task would be simple, however predicting it on Christmas Day is an altogether bigger challenge. The conditions of the bet cite that bets will be settled "using data from the main International Airports of each city and that 1mm of snowfall must be recorded as falling between 00:00 and 23:59 on Dec 25th 2010".

It is usual for snow to fall in London and the south of England after Christmas, with largest falls occuring in late January or early February, but it may be of some significance that this cold snap is due to arrive as early as the first week of December this year, laying the way for a white festive season. Paddy Power do offer odds on other cities with New York understandably, favourite to be festively white at 8/11.

Dublin and Cork appear at 10/3 and 5/1 respectively but with their current economic and political crisis it would be unfortunate if the Irish had to contend with harsh weather conditions as well. For those lucky enough to be searching out the sun during this holiday period in the Mediterranean or in the southern states of America it would certainly be a cruel twist of fate if the white stuff was to follow them to their destination. Lanzarote and Florida given at Odds of 66/1 and 80/1 respectively look safe at the moment but surely 1mm of snow at 80/1 on Christmas Day would be tolerated by any punter!
