Golden Globe Betting Points To Meryl Streep Sweeping Up 2012 Film Awards

Whilst thoughts are absorbed with the tinsel and mince pies of the festive season the canny novelty punter will be casting their eye over the up and coming awards season for 2012. The first ceremony to take place is the Golden Globes and frequently the results of these particular gongs herald much of the subsequent successes with both the BAFTAS and the supremely coveted Oscars. Bookmakers Paddy Power have opened their books on the subject and there is one particular market that looks set to do nothing but shorten as the New Year is welcomed in.

Last year Colin Firth’s success in The King’s Speech was flagged up in a similar way well before the carol concerts were silenced. He was way ahead of his field and his odds continued to shorten during January and February. Unfortunately the eyes are not on domestic actors this year, but if there was any compensation to be had regarding National Pride, the subject is without doubt British.

The hot market in question is of course the bet regarding Best Actress In A Drama. Meryl Streep is 4/7 favourite to add another award to her trophy cabinet for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady. Unfortunately all of the contenders are American this year and certainly not without talent, but Streep’s remarkable representation of the Conservative’s Grand Dame, has brought critical acclaim across the board. The film itself is rather flawed in its limited storyline and insight, but Streep’s ability to capture the essence of the woman looks set to be rewarded.

Viola Davis is second favourite at 15/8 with Glenn Close, Rooney Mara and Tilda Swinton at longer odds of 7/1 and 9/1 respectively, and whilst the film The Help has been very well received it looks unlikely to catch the main swathes of votes. The key in this market is to make a punt before the markets shorten ridiculously, which will happen after the Golden Globes.
