News headlines across the globe yesterday reported that social networking site Facebook had clocked 500 million users and was still growing. Of those 500 million it is detailed that 250 million use the site everyday, so it is no surprise that bookmakers Paddy Power have opened a book to bet on the success of the movie 'The Social Network', which details the rise of this phenomenon, which is due for release in October.
Launched in 2004 the website was constructed by Mark Zuckerberg and three of his fellow computer science students whilst at Harvard University for the sole purpose of student interaction. Overtaking the original proponents of this phenomena like Friends Reunited My Space and Bebo, Facebook is now a global brand reaching a vast and varied demographic, unfettered by cultural boundaries or languauge, used as a communication tool across the world.

It is no surprise that this story of American endeavour and entrepreneurship has found itself into the scriptwriters dens in Hollywood, rather it is extraordinary that it has taken this long. The film written by Aaron Sorkin has been adapted from Ben Mezrich's 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding Of Facebook, is directed by David Fincher and has not had any direct involvement or input from the original founders.
Clearly with 500 million Facebook users, the producers will clearly be counting on a lot of interest in the story behind its creation and the inevitable box office reward that could be generated. The cast consisting of Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Brenda Song, Rashida Jones, Max Minghella, Rooney Mara, and Joseph Mazzello suggests that this is a film chasing a box office pot of gold rather than a more artistic endeavour. Fincher however, who achieved Film Academy recognition by being nominated for an Oscar with the movie, 'The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button' , would clearly like to repeat that success and more.
Box Office record success is probably more likely than Oscars, but with the Facebook magic dust surrounding this project anything is possible !
