As the tumult over The News Of The World and News International rumbles on, with new revelations exploding across the media on a daily basis, column inches and air time consumed with analysis and debate, it is becoming clearer that the impact is being felt not only in the Metropolitan Police Force but is rising to the very top of Government. Primarily as a result of David Cameron's employment of Andy Coulson as his Head Of Communicationas, questions are being asked about whether this could lead to the Prime Minister's demise. Bookmakers Paddy Power have opened a book on the subject, which the PM will be glad to know he is Odds on to survive 2011.

Rupert Murdoch's appearance at the parliamentary committe on Tuesday was watched around the world, such is the newsworthiness of the billionaire media baron being forced to eat 'humble pie', but it also ensures that the story will not now go away until every leaf is turned and every avenue explored, this is no longer a domestic issue the world is watching. The outrage that ensued when it was discovered that murder victim Milly Dowler had also been a victim of phone hacking, changed the whole tone of the debate from one of Celebrity intrusion to unashamed voyeurism and manipulation which was so powerfully berated by the population that the country's best selling Sunday paper was shut down.
The resignation of the Met's Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson is also a real indicator of how far the tendrils of this issue are expected to spread. Allegations that police officers received payments for information as well as the phone hacking itself are now all up for debate and scrutiny, which will ensure the judicial enquiry into the whole affair is gainfully employed for many months. High profile arrests continue to shock the nation and with Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks at the forefront, largely because of their well recorded proximity to the Prime Minister.
The Paddy Power bet asks whether Cameron can last the year, not if the coalition will fail. Certainly at a time of economic fragility and national austerity this will not add to the Prime Minister's popularity and Ed Milliband and the Labour Party are being handed their first really explosive ammunition to sustain damning pressure on the leader of the government. If it turns out that Andy Coulson was savvy to the machinations at The News Of The World and that Cameron discounted the advice of those close to him when employing him at Number 10, the P.M.'s judgement will be seriously questioned. Similarily if Rebekah Brooks is deemed to have been allowed to cross any professional boundaries in her relationship with Cameron, the country would surely lose faith in their Premier. As the man who trumpeted righteousness during the M.P's expenses scandal, Cameron will hope that the story will settle as the judicial enquiry ambles on and that the high water mark of revelations has been reached. As the saying goes 'A day is a long time in politics', so a small punt at 4/1 that he wont survive five and a half months might be worth a shot.
Will Cameron survive 2011 as PM
Yes 1/7
No 4/1
