Kasabian were the main contenders to take both the Best Group and Best Album prize at the 30th Brit Awards ceremony on February 16th, on the back of their album, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum but newcomers Florence and The Machine have edged ahead in what had looked like the most secure gamble to take in this particular market. Egos and loyalties are flying and it looks like the new may just oust the established in what had semed like a secure bet for Best British Album.
Surrounded by controversy at times the Brit Awards has not always been the most scintillating or professional of ceremonies and the main interest at the moment is the possibility that Robbie Williams will perform with his old bandmates Take That. It is already widely publicized that he will receive an award for contribution to music which must be something of a relief to him after his shambolic performances on this year's X Factor and is also favorite to scoop the best male soloist prize, which says more about the dirth of talent in this sector this year than about Robbie's musical prowess at the moment. It would seem like a triumph for Robbie rather than the rest of Take That who have secured a fabulous re launch in the past couple of years to play together at this venue and the producers would surely be keen to have this asa centrepiece for this homegrown event. Certainly a bet worth looking at.

In contrast to the Best Group category the most fiercely contended sector and the most difficult to call is the best Female Artist. Leading the way is Florence and the Machine, who also tops the odds in the British Breakthrough Act, and is second to Kasabian in the Best Group category but hot on her heels, Lily Allen and Pixie Lott have also a keen fan base and critical acclaim to generate adequate support. It seems Florence and The Machine should pick up at least one Gong but Lily Allen could easily pip her to the post.
On the basis that at the moment as a National treasure and household name she can do little wrong it would be a surprise if Cheryl Cole is unable to secure Best British Single with, Fight For This Love, although purists may find that a hard pill to swallow, popularity has always been a factor in this arena. An ex X factor band JlS are her closest contenders at present but like them, Ms Cole's stint on the X factor has certainly had a positive effect on her career. Her prodigy Joe McElderry's ludicrously appears in the same category after all of 6 weeks in the business. What a wonderfully shallow world this is ? Having a punt on the outcomes has to increase the fun!
