Audiences around the world have been captivated since the beginning of August by the story of the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground. Having assumed that no one had survived the devastating collapse, the discovery that the men were indeed alive sent shockwaves around the globe. The subsequent rescue attempts and the inevitable concern for the health and welfare of the trapped workers united television viewers world wide. Unsurprisingly there has been immediate speculation about a movie, given the script is as enthralling as any blockbuster and bookmakers Paddy Power have already opened a market, 'Chilean Miners' Movie Directors Odds', offering any punter a wager on who will be employed to direct the film.
Given that the miners were only earning £630 net from their industry and aware of the global interest in their dilemma, during their internment they not only were supplied with food, water and first aid, but also with legal advice regarding their marketability on their release. TV companies were reportedly offering £250,000 to each of the miners' families for their individual stories, but as a homogenous and determined group they have decided to bind themselves legally so that no one miner will receive any more than another as a result of their adventure.

Last week at the Frankfurt Book Fair, Jonathan Franklin a british journalist who had full access to the whole rescue mission, sold the rights to his book, '33 Men Buried Alive', to publishers Transworld. The marketplace is clearly already gearing up to exploit the miners' story, although with the soladarity of those involved and the pride of a Chilean nation at stake, any final screenplay is more likely to have their personal input than an outsider's perspective.
A film will be made, that is certain, probably several, in fact there will be an array of documentaries, TV series and chat shows absorbed with this extraordinary story of survival, and 33 miners in Chile were certainly never have to work again on the back of the fame and fortune engendered. The 'definitive' movie however, will only be directed by someone who endorses with authenticity the bravery and courage of these men. Paul Greengrass is 7/2 favourite at present, but reflecting on Steven Spielberg's treatment of Schindler's list, he would appear to have the experience and sensitivity to move reality to the big screen and at 4/1 could be a more obvious choice. Although perhaps Clint Eastwood's notoriety with such films as 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly', could tip the balance in his favour!
