Two reality TV shows are courting the attention of the novelty punters at the moment, both showcases for those celebrities keen to boost their public profile in a positive way and pick up some cash en route. Celebrity Big Brother although served up as a daily treat lasts for only four weeks, whilst Dancing On Ice has a much longer shelf life albeit with only a weekly outing. Both programmes require the punter to understand the importance of likeability above and beyond expertise. For those entrenched in the house in Elstree this concept is under far greater scrutiny as they live side by side their rivals, on Dancing On Ice the responses to the judges and the post performance interviews are key to determining if the public are going to warm to the varying personalities or not.
Emmerdale and Hollyoaks star Matthew Wolfenden was the opening favourite and continues to dominate the market at odds of 5/4 with bookmakers Paddy Power to win. Whilst he has a clear skill set on the ice and is easy on the eye he also seems very personable when interviewed. This particular programme does have the added dynamic and potential for injury however and can blight even the most hopeful contestant and it has been reported this week that Wolfenden has spent many hours in an ice bath trying to resolve an injury in time for this weekend's performance.
Wolfenden's closest rival at the moment is Jorgie Porter, a fellow actor on the Soap Hollyoaks, who was anticipated to bring glamour to the proceedings although not the level of skill that she is currently displaying. The combination of not only being attractive but also being disciplined and athletic enough to compete is a heady mix that will take some beating. Although it is wise for the punter to remember that the public vote is largely female on these shows and when push comes to shove at the endgame a male competitor is likely to have the edge.
As ever Philip Schofield makes a slick job of presenting the show with new co host Christine Bleakley, but often seems to find it hard not to reflect public opinion, which has of course been his forte for so long on This Morning . He has seemed as surprised as the audience that the free running superstar Sebastian Foucan has not hit the heady heights of the competition straight away. Foucan's athletic prowess was expected to translate easily to the ice rink, but therein lies another imperative for succeeding. As Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean know from their prestigious background, athleticism and technique count for nothing if there is an inability to communicate the sentiment of the music or co ordinate with its meter and rhythm, without this failure is inevitable.
This is still early days in the competition and contestants still have plenty of time to improve in the areas in which they are weakest whether that be interpretation or technique. Mark Rhodes, Corey Feldman and Rosemary Conley certainly have the chance to achieve some personal goals but extremely unlikely to get anywhere near the endgame, they simply have too great a distance to rise
For the punter seeking to unveil a dark horse, Ex X Factor Chico ,at a long 8/1 at the moment, could be well worth a gamble. Whilst he never had a singing voice, he does have a sense of rhythm and timing, is personable and is making a good stab at the technical demands.
