3D Avatar Favourite to Scoop Best Film Oscar

The movie awards season has kicked off with the Golden Globe Awards and science fiction epic Avatar has won Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director Prizes a pointed indicator that Oscar glory is in sight on March 7th on both counts.

Reportedly costing $300 million to make, the film uses breakthrough stereoscopic film making technology to bring successful 3D viewing to the cinema screen for the first time. Grossing $77 million on its opening weekend in the States, whilst not always an indicator of Oscar triumph has been matched with global critical acclaim which sees it pulling away from its nearest competitor.

Starring Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang, the cast is rich in talent and James Cameron as Director is no stranger to Oscar success with Titanic. It is in fact reported that Avatar could well knock Titanic off its 'highest ever grossing movie' plinth in a few weeks. Rich in storyline, deep in talent and a un matchable technological edge it looks unlikely that the Best Film of the Year could really go anywhere else and Cameron as Director of the piece looks likely to add another Oscar to his collection.

Film Awards Betting

The closest rival to Avatar is The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow who would be the first woman to win a Best Director Trophy in the Academy's history, whose storyline is centred on an American Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team during the Iraq war. An independent film it has found critical acclaim at Venice and Canadian Film Festivals but it looks likely that its gritty centre will not be able to match the draw of the innovation of Avatar with the Academy.
