Well it finally looks as if poor Arlene Phillips injection of passion and energy into 'So You Think You Can Dance'is paying off. The last ten dancers are now lined up to embark on the endgame and whilst Matt is still leading the odds in bookmaker Paddy Power's market he is finally being caught up by Katie and Charlotte. As followers of the specials articles on Betting Directory will know I have never been a fan of a show that has such a confused format but my attention is finally beginning to be caught.
The major lesson to be learnt from this programme is, that whilst no one would like to admit that these talent shows are about the judges, it is an unavoidable central component for the success of the programme. The X factor which has dominated the reality TV talent show world, succeeding with phenomenal audience figures as well as the subsequent advertisinfg revenue has manifestly relied upon the personalities of Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and to a lesser extent Dannii Minogue and their chemistry with each other and the audience.
Without the public, and indeed the contestants, interest in the views of the judges there is absolutely no drama and no basis on which the audience can assess their own critique. In fact Strictly Come Dancing also has a perfect blend of personalities to guide the celebrities through their paces, with the ebullient Bruno Tonioli and self important Craig Revel Horwood acting as the perfect foil for the conservative Len Goodman. Alesha Dixon is still finding her feet after taking over from Arlene Phillips and after her role on So You Think You Can Dance the BBC must be rueing the day they let Arlene go.
Hopefully now that SYTYCD is down to the last ten, the quality of the performances will energize the show although the strange procedure of changing partners and dance disciplines doesn't make easy watching. Cat Deeley has also been disappointing, whether she has spent too much time in the US lately and finds it harder to slot into her usual comfort zone of presenting in the UK it doesn't always feelas if she is caught up in a show she enjoys.
Will Matt Win? Odds of 7/2 say he will and with a predominantly female audience he has every chance, but he still has to remain injury free and if Arlene is able to project her enthusiasm for Katie onto the viewers, she might just sway them. Nigel Lythgoe has been beyond bland, Cisco beyond camp and Louise Rednapp little more than a passenger. perhaps the BBC should think about a show called 'So You Think You Can Impress Arlene?' and have done with it?
