As the coveted Golden Globes found their exuberant winners this week , the movie awards season is well and truly under way with the pinnacle coming at the Oscar Ceremony in the spring.. This market is usually one of the safest in the Novelty/Specials world with prices generally shortening as each ceremony indicates the direction that the critics are going. There can be some differences in the conclusions of the varying judging panels but it is very rare. The key is to get on early as The Golden Globes illuminate the path before the prices endlessly shorten.
Whilst of course there is no such thing as a dead cert, the categories that look safest in the Oscar betting are those of Best Picture and Best Actress. The Artist is already at a short 1/3 to win with Paddy Power, having scooped three globes for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Original Film Score, which is no surprise given that the movie is a re working of The Silent movie era and relies on its music. This movie has also certainly benefitted from the Jack Russell Dog Uggie who is the four legged star of the film and in doing the rounds of TV interviews has been a fantastic promotional tool. That being said, the film is a novel and original vehicle, a refreshing display of creativity in an industry that can get bogged down in endless revamps of the same old storyline.
The Best Actress Oscar is tipped to go once again to Meryl Streep for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady again at a very short price of 8/15. Streep has now been nominated a staggering 16 times for an Oscar and has won Best Actress twice and her portrayal of the infamous British Prime Minister has been deemed a masterpiece of her profession, with an immaculate accent and consistent severity that has amazed audiences. The film has, by contrast met a very tepid response by the critics, an intriguing fact when Streeps performance has been so praised, but the storyline and emotional depth of the script has been criticised as one dimensional. So whilst it looks like Streep's Masterclass will be rewarded , odds of 100/1 to win Best Picture indicates that in this case the star IS bigger than the film!
