The strawberries and cream are primed, the lawns are perfectly cut, Sue Barker and John McEnroe are on standby, the nation takes a deep breath before negotiating another quest for a British Champion, but will the most uncertain element of the Wimbledon fortnight, the weather, disrupt even the best laid plans? Bookmakers Paddy Power are offering a market on how many times the roof will be used on the centre court as a result of rain and judging by the current meteorological trend it may well be used more than it has ever been before.
The roof was built as a result of the disruption caused over the years to the All England Tennis Club's showcase by the rain. Finished in 2009, the construction was hailed as an expensive but magnificent solution to the unpredictable English summer, but in reality has only been used on three occasions and and only once for an entire match. A fourth round womens singles match was finished undercover in 2009 and in the same year Andrew Murray played (and won!!) a five setter against Stanislas Wawrinka, coming off court with heavy criticism of the detrimental effect enclosing the court had on the play.
The weight of a nation's expectation obviously weighs heavily on the Scotsman's shoulders again this year, but from his past experience, he will be hoping that the weight of the increased humidity resulting from a covered centre court will not add to his burden. The expensive structure was funded to avoid the tedious displays of covered courts and bored spectators on the BBC's coverage, although Sir Cliff Richard's spontaneous sing song to the centre court is a bit of anecdotal Wimbledon history that the British secretly love to own.
The decision to close the roof lies with referee Andrew Jarrett and it is not an easy one. If it is obvious that there would be unending rain throughout the day there would be no question that the roof would provide the best solution but an English Summer is rarely so predictable. Sunshine and showers and an exacting schedule, as well as tennis egos the size of basketballs, mean that Jarrett's job is a minefield , but according to Paddy Power, who price seven days of use as its favourite option at odds of 5/2, it looks like he is going to earn his money this year
