Whilst much of the attention with this year's Oscar ceremony has revolved around the battle for Best Picture between Avatar and The Hurt Locker and the domestic history of the two directors Cameron and Bigelow, British interest will be focused on the category of Best Actress.
Whilst Hollywood is absorbed by the technical wizadry of 3D megalith Avatar and the record breaking box office success it has acheived, the category of Best Actress highlights the industry's recognition and appreciation of a well conceived gritty storyline and performance. Two Brits are among the five nominees and bookmakers Paddy Power feel that of the two newcomer Carey Mulligan has the best shot at the prize.
Sandra Bullock is at present favourite to win in Blind Side, the story of a homeless African American youngster finding security and hope with a middle class White family, of which Bullock is the mainstay. Obama's American whilst seemingly having falen out of love with Obama, may be drawn more favourably to the Myth.

Hollywood veteran Meryl Streep is nominated yet again for Julie and Julia, a million miles from the sci fi world of Avatar, Streep plays a burgeoining chef whose life becomes embroiled with an internet blogger. Audiences and critics rarely fail to commend Streep's work, but the complexity and depth of script with the other nominees films may work against her this time.
'An Education' won the Audience Choice award and the Cinematography award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and stars Carey Mulligan in a coming of age movie. Set in 60's London,a Father's aspirations to secure his daughter's education at Oxford runs into chaos as she becomes embroiled with a man twice her age. Recognized as a startling performance by a newcomer, politics dictate that a Bafta seems more likely than an Oscar.
Precious, starring Gabourey Sidibe has some comparisons to The Blind side, telling the harrowing tale of an overweight, illiterate, pregnant Black girl who is offered the chance of an education.
Finally historical drama The last Station has Helen Mirren as Sofya, Tolstoy's wife, offering Britains second chance at this Oscar prize.
The storylines are gritty, the performances undisputedly impressive, but this is an American Institution and unless the film has secured multiple nominations, which neither An Education or The Last Station have, the winner looks more likely to be American. Streep to win again? That just wouldn't seem right. Bullock looks like a good choice
