Last night the much tipped performance of British actor Colin Firth, reaped the accolade of a much coverted Golden Globe for Best Actor. Unsurprisingly, given the trend and opinion that the Golden Globes historically establish during the award season, bookmakers Paddy Power in their 'Oscar Odds'have Firth looking unbeatable at 1/16.
Whilst Cannes and Berlin have often vaunted the general trend of opinion and almost pride themselves in stepping away from the mainstream in rewarding less high profile films and performances, the Goden Globes are almost always a good marker for what will happen at the Oscar ceremony. Certainly British actors playing royalty has always gone down well at the academy, with Judy Dench winning with her portrayal of Elizabeth I and Helen Mirren winning with 'The Queen', which of itself was a very mediochre movie. The Monarchy is certainly still a very exportable commodity and 'The King's Speech' a challenging role for the eager thespian.
Firth's closest rival is James Franco who takes centre stage in the epic '127 hours', depicting the gruelling account of climber Aron Ralston as he is faced with the decision to cut off his own hand whilst trapped in a canyon in Utah. The film, directed by Danny Boyle of 'Slumdog Millionaire' fame,is carried entirely by Franco and well deserves his place in the nominees, but the Academy are still sure to be wooed by the romance of a monarch in personal turmoil as he battles with the challenge of a stammer in such a public role.
Another Brit Jim Broadbent appears on the best actor list for his performance in Mike Leigh's gentle yet gritty movie 'Another Year', where the lives of an ageing couple are fondly but unsentimentally explored. Leigh has been rewarded in the past at Cannes, by the BAFTAS and won a golden Lion for 'Vera Drake', but Hollywood has never received him well, so it is unlikely that Broadbent will be picking up a statue.
In the best actor category Jesse Eisenberg appears behind Franco in what is seen as the film of the year 'The Social Network'. Picking up the Golden Globe for Best Film, the movie which unravels the history of Facebook and its creators is tipped to win the Oscar easily at 1/4. It looks like the Oscars this year are a 'two horse race' between 'The Social Network' and 'The King's Speech', with all the other contenders battling for publicity and marketing slots rather than statues!
