Betting On The Filly Factor: Who Will Be Racing's Next Claire Balding?

The world of novelty betting is never dull, reality shows spring up all the time, spawned by the monoliths, the X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing and Big Brother offering ever increasing opportunities for a punt. Some competitions are clearly more well known, with a more loyal following, than others and this week such a contest is coming towards it's climax and bridges the gap between more traditional bookies markets. Paddy Power have spied the opportunity and are offering odds on the 'Filly Factor', even though there are only two runners.

Horse racing in so many ways has been male dominated for years, whether in the yards or in the racing saddle, although the presence of Claire Balding on the BBC's television coverage has certainly led the way for a greater female contribution to the spectacle. The title 'The Filly Factor', obviously a play on the title of Simon Cowell's showcase programme, does also echo the sexist traditions of Leslie Phillips with regards to women, but its concept is an attempt to introduce them to a so far hallowed area of male domination - the commentary box.

Rachel Casey and Hayley Moore compete in the final after beating six other competitors in the semi finals at Bath and Doncaster racecourses on the 11th and 12th June. Judged by a panel which included jockey Tom Scudamore and broadcasters Lesley Graham and Gina Bryce, Rachel, who has had some experience presenting Ladbrokes Live Radio and Hayley, whose sibling is Ryan Moore ( former champion jockey) will compete at Ascot on the 24th July for the £2,500 prize and a place on the racing industry's Commentating Course.

At present both women are at odds of 4/5, recognition of the difficulty in calling a two horse race and indicative of the subjective nature of the judging. Whatever the outcome it can be no bad thing for the racing industry to broaden it's appeal by having a female voice in the commentary box.
