As Jonathan Ross comes to the end of his contract with the BBC there will not only be a vacancy on his Friday Night show but the prestigious Film 2010 will be short of a presenter. As ever Paddy Power is on the ball and is offering Odds on who will fill his shoes.
A gamble on who's the next Woss at the moment appears to be a pretty clear cut choice with Mark Kermode the clear favourite at 1/3. Ross has always displayed a more informed critical personna in the Film 2010 programmes than he does on his chat show, but has also brought his own brand of sarcasm and cynicism which brought the programme to a new audience after replacing Barry Norman. Kermode is an obvious choice with his widely acknowledged film critique credentials, but would herald the return to a more serious programme with his well known bias towards art house movies and dislike of Blockbusters. Ross could be as enthusiastic about horror films as he could about animation or historical drama and the BBC may be concerned that Kermode's style could ostracize a number of Film 2010 viewers which at a time when audience viewing figures are more important than ever may preclude his appointment.

At Odds of 11/4, Paddy Power has Kermode's closest rival for the position as Alex Zane, whose comedic and presenting background would seem an easier transition from Ross than Kermode, but could be seen as edging a little too far into thelight and fluffy! As host of, 'Alex Zane's Guest List' on Channel 4, he has experience of the film show genre, but after the Ross/Brand scandal last year it would be an interesting policy decision for the BBC to be seen to be dumbing down with Film 2010.
Alex King at 9/2 could be the compromise between the two front runners that would tick more of the BBC's current policy boxes. As in-house movie critic for Radio 1 and Radio 7 and appearing on ITV's 'At The Movies' and 'London Tonight', he already has an established young audience. Of the other options available for this bet it is surprising that Claudia Winkleman is the only female when Mariella Frostrop and Kirsy Young had been mooted in recent weeks. For the retired Mr Wogan or the disgraced Russell Brand to front Film 2010 would point such a different direction for the BBc that questions of TV License payments would be sure to rear its ugl head again.
As Film 2010 gets a new host the only certainty is that the successful applicant will be able to pronounce his r's but no book offered on this !
