As the national news is overwhelmed with stories of economic doom, rising unemployment figures, increases in the rate of inflation and further cutbacks in local services the media are clinging onto the imminent Royal Wedding between William and Kate Middleton as a raft that can lift the national psyche out of the gloom. Whether the ostentatious marriage of a couple who are clearly not affected by the employment market or the rise in price of their weekly groceries will lead to enthusiasm or cynicism is unclear but bookmakers Paddy Power are obviously keen to reflect the column inches in the papers by offering 10 markets in their Royal Wedding Betting.
Paddy Power would not offer such a range and variety of books if they did not think that there was a real interest in the event. They have already had books which have come and gone on the subject including where the wedding would take place and who would be William's best man. On both occasions the favourite took the prize. Westminster Abbey was the chosen location and Prince Harry the best man, even though the latter was not a traditional decision.
There have been numerous caviat's in the press that William and Kate want the public to be reassured that they are not unaware of the impact of a recession but still hope to put on a show that every citizen can be proud of. Kate has already announced that she will travel to her wedding in a car not a Royal coach, so where will they chose as their London residence?
Paddy Power list St James Palace as the 8/15 favourite. Building work has being going on on Prince Charles' Herefordshire estate which has been rumoured to be a future home for the young couple and at present they are based in Anglessey as William pursues his career in search and rescue, but they will need a London base for their official functions. As one of the oldest palaces, commissioned by Henry VIII it is certainly appropriate for a future monarch and is the current residence of the Princess Royal and Princess Alexander. Whilst Buckingham Palace is a close secondat 15/8 maybe its just a bit too much to move in with his grandma!
Will Kate include the word'obey' in her vows? This will certainly be a test of how modern the couple are or how controlled by the royal establishment. It is hard to believe that the current monarch agreed to obey her husband and escort the Duke Of Edinburgh so perhaps tradition will prevail if in name only!
