The 'whodunnit' murder plot of Eastenders Archie Mitchell has gripped the nation since the Walford villain came to a bloody end on Christmas Day. However, viewers have been left guessing which character in the BBC1 soap bludgeoned Archie to death in the Queen Vic and bookmaker, Skybet, are offering odds on 'who killed Archie Mitchell' ahead of the murderer being unveiled in Friday's live epsisode to celebrate the show's 25th anniversary.
A host of characters have been portrayed as the potential culprit for the killing of Archie, who had amassed a string of enemies following his 18 month stint on Albert Square. These include his own daughter, Ronnie Mitchell, ex-wife Peggy and his fiancee at the time of his death, Janine Butcher as well as Ian Beale who had been at the centre of Archie and Janine's bribery plot. Bradley Branning is also in the frame after it emerged that Archie had raped his partner Stacey Slater, who is now pregnant following the incident. However, the odds on offer with Stan James are suggesting that the storyline could be set for another twist with none of the favourites the usual suspects. It is even believed that even the cast of Eastender don't know who has commited the murder at this stage.

Sean Slater heads the betting at 10/3, and given the Walford 'Bad Boy' has not been in the soap for over a year it would be a huge surprise for viewers if turns out to be him who brought Archie to a gruesome end. He was last seen driving his wife Roxie Mitchell and daughter Amy into a frozen lake in a murder plot of his own, before walking off in to the night after they all survived, never to be seen since. There was never any love lost between Sean and Archie and the news that Archie raped his sister Stacey could be enough for the troubled former soldier to have made a return to Walford to finish Archie off.
Stacey herself has yet to be considered a suspect but her odds earlier in the week of 6/1 suggest she could be a likely candidate. She has so far let Bradley torture himself as to whether the punch he landed on Archie was enough to kill him and knowing that Charlie Clements (who plays Bradley) is leaving the soap, maybe Stacey commiting the murder is the story that will see Bradley leave the Square.
The other surprise suspect in the betting is Ben Mitchell, who is an 3/1 chance after being 11/2 before Tuesday's episode. The son of Phil Mitchell was unhappy at Archie forcing him and his family to leave the Queen Vic and had added incentive after the treatment of Archie to his elder brother, Ian Beale.
Whilst there is no guarantee at this stage as to 'who killed Archie Mitchell', one thing is for sure, Eastenders is expected to attract the biggest soap audience for many years when it reveals all on Friday night in what is sure to be a thrilling episode.
It could be too obvious for a Mitchell to have killed Archie, putting both Stacey Slater or Bradley Branning firmly in the frame as the one 'whodunnit'. However, at 20/1, Peggy Mitchell is worth £10 of anyones money with Barbara Windsor set to leave the show in a blaze of glory after 16 years behind the Queen Vic bar.
Peggy was tipped up on Tuesday and has been supported in the betting and is now 12/1. Other big moves in the odds over the last couple of days include Stacey's new best friend, Becca Swanson who is 6/1 from as big as 20/1 on Wednesday this week and Shirley, who could have been backed at 66/1 just 48 hours ago and is now 14/1.
