The pressure cooker that is Big Brother is offering up its usual combination of egotistical behaviour which is intriguing now that the format is a seriously aged one. All those who have watched the show, and you would hope those participating would be included, should know by now that bragging about your career, divulging inside stories about other celebrities or showing a lack of humour is never popular, however the current housemates seem to have paid little heed to what is popular or simply cannot behave appropriately because their true character will not allow them to.
For this reason it was only a surprise to Natasha Giggs that she went this weekend not to anyone else. American actor Michael Madsen on hearing why Nicola was in the house was incredulous that having an affair with your husband's brother was the only source of her fame. As the other housemates asked her increasingly personal questions about her marriage and affair, her unravelling candour became very uncomfortable viewing.
Of course those housemates whose opinions reflect those of the general public will be immediately boosted in the popularity stakes. Natalie Cassidy has been at the top of the leaderboard from the outset, showing how fun, kindness and sincerity will win every time over the glamour of the Shannon Twins or Nicola McLean. However as the slightly sultry Michael Madsen gives his take on the proceedings with a rather more impressive show biz CV than his co- housemates his popularity is rising and he is now 3/1 favourite ahead of Natalie with bookmakers Paddy Power.
Frankie Cocozza, who has about as much show biz credence as Natasha Giggs, is faring rather better than expected with less starry eyed admiration than you would expect, but he is just too brash and too naive to win over the public. Odds of 9/1 reflect that he will have a reasonable run in the house but won't reach the endgame.
Of the other participants Denise Welch, who has embarked on her second round of reality TV after her adventures on Dancing On Ice, has really set herself up for some serious analysis from her colleagues on Loose Women. 53 year old Denise has found herself in a really abrasive relationship with Madsen who it seems she feels is too self important and too disinterested in her. This sort of conflict is of course the lifeblood of Big Brother and makes good viewing, but how Madsen responds may be the pivot that decides if he wins or looses. Domestic names always do better than transatlantic imports, but Welch could soon be perceived as petulant and indignant and should take a leaf out of Cassidy's book if she wants to stay to the end. Meanwhile Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas, who has had a quiet passage so far, is slowly coming up the leaderboard and now sits at odds of 5/1, he may well be the Dark Horse in this race!
