Cheryl Cole who has reached the heady heights of 'nation's sweetheart' over the past couple of years, whilst once again topping bookmakers Paddy Power's FHM's Sexiest Woman 2011 Odds market as 2/1 favourite, is in real danger of losing her crown. Cheryl Cole's career gained enormous momentum when she took over from Sharon Osbourne as a judge on the X Factor. Whilst her public profile was initially achieved as a member of Girls Aloud it was her demeanour with her acts and her refusal to be daunted by Simon Cowell that earnt her such enormous affection across the country.
This year after enormous personal drama, with her divorce from footballer Ashley Cole and her real life and death struggle with malaria, it would be acceptable to imagine her popularity was in tact. The British public however are very unforgiving if their icons begin to show any sign of weakness and this year, having recovered from a near fatal disease, her actions at the judges houses stage of the X Factor set her up for unexpected criticism.
Cole has won FHM's award for the past two years easily and clearly by her positioning on the list she is still thought to have a good chance. However, whilst it is certainly an award based on skin deep standards of beauty her natural forthright and down to earth character contributed massively to her popularity. By deciding to exclude Gamu Nhengu from the finals in favour of Katie Waissel and Cher Lloyd, Cole's character became tarnished with lack of judgement and a suspicion that she was pandering to Cowell's demands and was no longer her own woman.
Cheryl started the X Factor run favourite to secure her hat trick as winning judge but succumbed to Dannii Minogue and her act Matt Cardle. Similarily this year she would be expected to win the FHM award three years in succession but could be trumped by Nicole Scherzinger or Katy Perry. Scherzinger whose good looks have been admired by many whilst fronting The Pussycat Dolls stepped in for Cole during the X Factor this year and won many extra fans for her appropriate, humane and well conceived comments. She showed a natural and unpackaged love of music and her spontaneous dancing behind the judges' desk was well reported and admired. Katy Perry, with the added advantage of British comedian Russell Brand on her arm is certainly in with a shout at 5/2, but perhaps the dark horse is Rihanna who captivated 20 million viewers, men and women alike, on X Factor final night and sits quietly at 20/1. The Cheryl Cole camp will be watching this market avidly to assess the damage that 2010 has done to their unbeatable product.
