The discourse about the imminent Papal visit is building, financial implications on government budgets, child abuse by Catholic priests, whether or not there will be as many in attendance of the Pontiff's Mass as was hoped, are all subjects dominating today's headlines. Bookmakers Paddy Power, as ever keenly following the news, are offering a market for the eager punter to bet on the numbers at the Papal Mass at Cofton Park this Sunday.
Benedict XVI will arrive tomorrow in Edinburgh, 28 years after John Paul II, and unlike his predecessor does so in the guise of a State visit, so will be hosted by the Queen at Holy Rood House. The nature of this trip is being used as the reason that ticket sales for his open air services are low the Vatican's Spin doctors are already in evidence, but there is marked controversy around the man himself which many feel is a more likely reason for disinterest.

John Paul II was clearly more a man of the people, whilst Benedict is viewed as a scholar and an academic, who at a time of dwindling church rolls, is reluctant to modernise doctrine to make Catholicism more widely embraced. His background as a member of the Hitler Youth as a teenager, has shrouded his popular appeal from the outset, but his stalwart traditional views particularly on Aids, homosexuality, contraception and the misconduct of his priests has alienated him more from the public than any Pope of recent times.
Such has been the outcry towards this visit that 50 well know celebrities have signed a letter protesting about the occasion. The power of celebrity, that we have all become familiar with, is clearly now taking on the ultimate challenge against the leader of the Roman Catholic Church and with the likes of the much respected Stephen Fry leading the way, may indeed prove, if it were needed, that Benedict is not in step with current affairs or indeed sentiment. Whilst numbers of individuals describing themselves as Catholic has increased through immigration, numbers attending church regularly since John Paul's visit has reduced to one quarter, so the available pool of worshippers has certainly diminished. 80,000 pilgrims at Wembley in 1982 gathered to take Mass, this year it looks as if 50,000 will be a triumph and if the groundswell of dissent grows there make be more police and protesters than worshippers!
