The second batch of contenders for the Popstar To Operastar trophy took to the stage on Sunday, unveiling the levels of talent that are to be expected on this sort of show. Some may have been surprised to see Jocelyn Brown leave the programme, but being able to belt out a tune is altogether different from being able to soar through the scales in an impassioned, tuneful and controlled fashion and however hard judges and mentors alike tried to buff the performer's ego, it was clear that the public got it right by ousting her with their phone vote. Bookmakers Paddy Power still have Joe McElderry as favourite to win at short odds of 10/11 but it may not be that clear cut.
Unlikely as it might seem, the format for this show is proving to be a winning one. There is nothing quite so entertaining as seeing household names struggling in a medium that has brought them fame and fortune simply by changing the genre. Not only does it illuminate the immense difficulty of singing opera but uncovers the fragility or strength of the egos that are taking part. Obviously a popstar does not require the classical training of the likes of judge Katherine Jenkins, which certainly gives opera the recognition that is often missing with the general public, but watching the short VCR's before each aria displays precisely the traumas that are felt when a note cannot be found or held and sets the stage for the celebrities journey to be revealed.
This week ex Steps star Claire Richards certainly made an impression so it is no surprise that she finds herself second in the running at 2/1. This is as much a reflection of the shortness of the public's memory as of the outcome itself. Last week saw Cheryl Baker rise up the leader board in much the same way, whereas now she sits back in fourth place at 7/1 behind Andy Bell who succeeded this week. Memories are certainly short and rather fickle.
Whilst McElderry is the clear front runner, helped by the support he brings by from his followers on the X Factor and is not hampered by his likeable personality, this may not bring him eventual success. Very often front runners can fall at the last hurdle in reality competitions, simply because they have been at the front for so long. The British public llike nothing more than supporting a trier who converts his/her effort to achievement. Put simply if you're just too good to start with you'd better pull out something extra special to beat the competitor who comes in at a lower level but through hard graft climbs the ladder of success. Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon display control and over embellished enthusiasm respectively in their critiques, reflecting the roles of judges Vanessa Mae and Simon Callow, but in the end it will be ITV viewers who do the crowning and Claire Richards and particularly Cheryl Baker could be in with a pleasant surprise at the end of the run.
