For the last ten years, whilst some have rated the summer months by the frequency of hose pipe bans, the imminent BA strikes at peak holiday times, or the strenuous national past time of watching another British Tennis player fail at Wimbledon, for some the summer has meant unlimited hours in front of the box watching 12 wannabes vie for the public's attention in a house in Elstree. Yes it was thought that Big Brother had gone the way of the Magic Roundabout and Andy Pandy but no as they say 'where there's muck there's brass' and the mucky goings on in the world of the Big Brother household has tempted Channel 5 to spend out and revive the format. Bookmakers Paddy Power are of course tracking the event, keen to tempt the fanbase back to their doors for a punt.
There has been growing speculation about who will front the show, Davina McCall having stepped away into pastures new, and we have already evaluated that particular market here on Betting Directory, but as it becomes clear that the show will launch with a celebrity opening gambit, the question is which 'celebrities'and I use that term loosely, will feel that their'career', a term I also use with inbuilt flexibility, will benefit from this sort of PR?
The rumours are that the show will run for 3 weeks in August with 12 well known faces before the full length show with members of the public settles into the autumn schedules. Favourite to appear , at odds of 5/1, is Amy Childs. Finding fame through the popular ITV reality show,'The Only Way Is Essex', she certainly caught the attention of the media and is comfortable in the spotlight and as the new face of Caprices Spring Summer lingerie selection she is beginning to notch up a promising earning capability. Her personna would definetly fit the Big Brother mould from the past and she would bring an audience to the new show but surely bigger names would create more excitement.
Paddy Power have emphasized that none of the names on their list have been confirmed as yet and that they are open to considering other individuals, which may well be something worth thinking about. Consider big names with intriguing careers who at the moment are in the PR wilderness and you are half way there. Remember Latoya Jackson appeared on the show, Bridget Nielsen and incredibly academic Germaine Greer( although she left very swiftly), so there are endless possibilities. Charlie Sheen would surely fit all the above criteria with his recent fall from grace, so his inclusion on the list is cheeky and an outside possibility, butChannel 5 may not have deep enough pockets for that particular coup.
Given that Prince William and his new wife will be ensconced by the fire after their pageant in April, Prince Harry's ex Chelsy Davy would of course be the next best thing, but odds of 33/1 would indicate that this could be social suicide for her and an outside chance. Joanna Lumley has shown her gameness on several occassions, she lived on a desert island for the sake of a TV documentary and is not precious about appearing in front of camera with no make up and always brings a certain sense of class and style to the screen, but she has recently finished a serious documentary on the Nile and if this is her shosen career path, Big Brother could just be a step backwards. She may also have to be mindful of her huge Ghurka fanbase who might not want to see their saviour under the microscope!
