The novelty betting market not only relies upon the unending public appetite for reality TV shows, but the ever increasing unsatiated need to grow and know celebrities. Bookmakers Paddy Power are the key players in this area and have used the enormous interest in the likes of Cheryl Cole and David Beckham to offer numerous books to their punters. As Cheryl finds herself a little more wobbly on her national treasure pedestal after leaving the UK to seek fame and fortune in the U.S., thankfully (for Paddy Power) a new 'celebrity' has been taken to the hearts of the British on the back of her international exposure at her sister's wedding. We are of course talking Pippa Middleton and now that she has declared she is single, bets can be taken on who her next boyfriend will be.
True fame has been reached when it is no longer necessary to use your given sirname, as Madonna, Beyonce and Rihanna all understand and there is now no doubt about who is the subject of debate when the name Pippa is used. The spectacle of Prince William and Kate's marriage was ostentatious and lavish as expected, but it was the unexpected that made the headlines. The otherwise seldom seen Pippa stole the show as main bridesmaid, in a figure hugging dress which almost eclipsed the bride. Within minutes of the ceremony concluding the tabloids were reflecting the effect of her presence and it became clear that she would now be cannon fodder for the red tops.
George Percy, an ex boyfriend, is favourite in the betting at odds of 4/5. She has already been seen with him at the Roland Garros Tennis finals, but this is as likely to be the actions of a loyal friend during these difficult times as of a potential suitor. Footage of Pippa and Prince Harry sharing a joke whilst following bride and groom down the aisle at Westminster Abbey fuelled romantic fantasies that the young prince could sweep the commoner off her feet and usurp his older brother and now that he and long term girlfriend Chelsy Davvy have split his position at 5/1 second favourite is understandable.
Clearly an attractive woman like Pippa is unlikely to remain single for long, but the pressure to choose well and wisely will be enormous. There will be a trusted inner circle of friends that both sisters depend upon and one of these like William's friend Benedict Cumberbatch might just fit the requirements. The two sisters do appear to be close and whilst Kate will be learning the highs and lows of being a royal, Pippa will be able to enjoy the greater freedom of choice of a commoner. Whilst she will certainly not be strait jacketed by the House of Windsor, her Mother's expectations may now have been so heightened that anything less than a Prince would be de rigeur. Having said that she could rebel and bring Peter Andre home at odds of 250/1, now who wouldn't pay to see Katie Price's face on that day?
