Brit Awards Odds: EllieGoulding Neck And Neck With Laura Marling

The award season is in full flow, the BAFTAS last night saw the final preamble before the Oscars on the 27th February,but the British music industry comes into its own tomorrow with the annual Brit Awards ceremony. Bookmakers Paddy Power have ten markets, with one of the most hotly contested being the Best British Female, where Ellie Goulding and Laura Marling are now neck and neck at odds of 11/10 to win the trophy.

Laura Marling had been just ahead earlier in the week but clearly the connections in the industry are moving towards Goulding in the closing hours of competition. By comparison in the British Male category Plan B, whilst still being chased by Tinie Tempah, continues to lead at 4/9 where he has been since the nominations, which would suggest he is on track to win.

The British Group category is dominated by an out and out favourite. Take That who began life as a popular but lightweight boy band established a renaissance with their re-formation and whilst Robbie Williams presence was no longer a pre requisite to their success, in fact his solo career had hit a bump, now with his inclusion they are set for a heady few years. Odds of 2/9 with Mumford and Sons their closest rivals at 11/4 represents an almost unassailable challenge for this award.

As if to reassure that the cycles of pop music continue to whirr through the same patterns regardlless of generation, 16 year old Canadian Justin Bieber whose success has been heavily dependent on teenage girls (as were Take That and The Beatles before him) looks comfortably and realistically positioned at odds of 1/3 to win the International Breakthrough Act category. Sales obviously dominate the success of an artist but they are heavily reliant upon marketing and no market is more pliable than teenage girls!
