The Goliaths of the Autumn TV schedules are finally in their last throws. Matt Cardle has secured the X Factor trophy and with the elimination of Scott Maslen and Gavin Henson this weekend Strictly Come Dancing heads towards its climax. Whilst it seemed for some weeks that two Matts would succeed in the reality TV world, bookmakers Paddy Power, in their 'Strictly Come Dancing Final Odds' market have Kara Tointon as favourite. Countryfile and One Show presenter Matt Baker has lead the field from the outset, with impressive displays of footwork and timing, but it seems that ex Eastenders star Kara has finally caught him.
Gavin Henson's departure was no surprise, despite his often annoying self belief he has been out classed for some time but Maslen was within shouting distance of winning up until the last two weeks. His gruelling Eastenders schedule combined with the necessary dance training have clearly taken their toll. A fact that was not only etched on his increasingly gaunt face but translated to mistakes on the dancefloor that he had previously overcome.
Maslen would have been expected to reach the final with increasingly high scores from the judges if it had not been for the impressive improvement in form by Pamela Stephenson. Although much has been made of her age, at 61 years she shows a level of fitness and agility that would make any pensioner proud, she has achieved a level of excellence that has been impressive to watch. As the only competitor to have secured a maximum score of 40 points, viewers of the show will know that the judges never award 10 for anything other than perfection, they never exercise sympathy points.
The final show includes the show dance when all the rules previously restricting them are lifted. Lifts are permissible, choreography is limitless and music is of their own choice. Matt Baker's gymnastic background could serve him well in this situation, enabling him to throw in some show stopping crowd pleasing acrobatics but that is never all that the audience is looking for. Kara certainly has become a precise and emotive dancing talent and is clearly benefitting, on and off the dancefloor from the romance with her dancing partner Artem Chigvintsev, everyone loves a romantic happy ending at this time of year.
Pamela ,is clearly the outsider at 4/1 but it will be a close call who will leave first on Saturday night. Pamela has certainly not stinted on the training front so far and will not bow out gracefully having stayed the distance. Matt Baker will really have to dazzle to stop the two women from overtaking him. Alesha Dixon, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Len Goodman will as ever be keen to have their say but it will be the sentiment of the viewers that will drive the outcome.
