Royal Ascot Specials Odds: What Colour Hat Will The Queen And The Duchess Of Cambridge Wear?

As regularly as the racing festival at Royal Ascot comes around so does the question mark over the colour of the Quen's hat on Ladies Day and, as expected, bookmakers Paddy Power have opened a book on the subject. However, unlike other years there is yet another royal whose headgear will be under scrutiny and that is of course Prince William's new bride Kate Middleton, now wearing the heady title of Duchess Of Cambridge.

As regular as clockwork Paddy Power offers a market on the colour of the Queen's hat , whether it is at the Trooping of the Colour, a state visit to Ireland or one of her grandchildren's weddings. Historically it was a question that the media was always excited by but, whilst continuing to adhere to tradition, with the more innovative styling of the younger royals the fashion questions and observations have become rather more sophisticated, like who has designed Zara Phillips ensemble or is Princess Beatrice wearing Jimmy Choo platforms?

Kate certainly proved her popularity with billions worlwide tuning into her Westminster Abbey wedding and yet already this week, no more than four weeks after the ceremony, her every fashion statement is being dissected. Red tops headlined this that the Duchess had been seen in a dress she had worn four years ago this weekend, although it is hard to believe when it has been noticeable to one and all that she has become stick thin since becoming a full member of The House Of Windsor.

With the amount of interest surrounding junior HRH, it is no wonder that the colour of her hat at Ascot is also up for debate and consequently being offered as a punt. Yellow is the favourite colour for the Queen's titfer at 9/4, whilst Kate is expected to sport a cream/white hat at 2/1. The Queen has never been a cutting edge fashonista, it was never in her job description, in fact the style of her hat rarely alters and the colours are regularly pastel shades of pink blue or yellow so this is a fair calculation but Kate has more options. Attending amateur jockey,Sam Waley Cohen's wedding at the weekend in Lambourn with sister Pippa she wore a black and white shift dress with black hat and shoes and has favoured the neutrality of black on many occasions. If she is to avoid becoming nothing more than a clothes horse the media will devour her, as they did Princess Diana, so a simple black hat could represent her way of staying current but not drawing more attention than she inevitably has clamouring at her door.
