Over The Rainbow is proving to be as popular with viewers as Lloyd Webber's other talent shows and with Graham Norton at the helm the BBC have struck gold again in the Saturday night TV slot. Britons are becoming more and more familiar with the opportunities to bet on their favourite programmes and the so called novelty markets continue to expand with bookmakers Paddy Power leading the field in this burgeoning genre. Over The Rainbow Odds see Danielle Hope edging to the front at 7/4 to win but there is a long way to go and many notes to reach.
Danielle certainly wowed the Judges, Charlotte Church, John Partridge and Sheila Hancock with her performance on Saturday night, but it did come as something of a shock that Bronte and Lauren found themselves in the drop zone with Lloyd Weber choosing the latter to remain. Bronte has certainly seemed stronger than Emilie or Sophie and whilst Lauren has performed well, an air of over confidence has obviously irked the judges and public, that particular character trait is never popular in any reality TV show.

Underlying so many of the panel's comments is the central poser that whilst someone may be vocally accomplished, " Is this performer Dorothy?". Last week Amy was the first to leave, which illustrates this point perfectly, capable of holding a tune and an audience, her height, bust and demeanour made her more suited to Legally Blonde than Judy Garland's classic role. There are certainly some, Emilie and Sophie in particular, whose vocals do not come up to scratch and subsequently seem very unlikely to reach the final stages, but Steph Fearon whose silky voice has impressed and has a definite presence simply does not fit the Wizard Of Oz mantle.
Whilst Danielle is rightfully ahead this week, Stephanie Davis and Jenny Douglas are hot on her shoulder. Jenny in particular has given two compelling performances, the first an up beat number showing her sense of fun and energy and her second, a sensitive authentic rendition showing that she has breadth and depth. Odds of 4/1 seem unlikely to lengthen with the sort of consistency and likeability she is producing and the youngest contender Dani Rayner is becoming more impressive as the nerves settle.
Sheila Hancock is a refreshing addition to the panel, a constructive critic un tainted by arrogance or sycophancy, unlike the self important Mr Partridge who seems to have come out of the same stable as Lauren and is not winning the public's admiration. Contestants on all of these talent searches have found subsequent roles in the West End almost without exception, perhaps Mr Partridge is hankering to change the East end for the West End, but as Lauren has learnt humility and authenticity is everything in this game!
