It has long been recognized that the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest is not necessarily the exponent of Europe's most excellent musical talent, but the most popular on the day, cynically factoring in the tactical voting that Eurovision have constantly insisted is no longer an issue, although this may be a case of the 'organization, once again, doth protest too much!'. However, according to bookmakers Paddy Power the top three favourites include Ireland's entry performed by Jedward and it seems they have now leapfrogged the UK's entry at odds of 4/1 to win outright.
Ireland have been the most successful country in Eurovision but have failed to regain the title for many years and it seems that the Emerald Isle, proud of its musical tradition, may have just been handed a poisoned chalice in the form of the hyperactive twins. Their song 'Lipstick' is certainly annoyingly catchy and the comic book facade that the marketing men have created for the boys meets begrudging enthusiasm wherever they perform. A phenomenon on the X Factor, which irritatingly wouldn't go away Jedward was a triumph for Irishman Louis Walsh and a thorn in Cowell's side, but it seems Louis might be having the last laugh on this occasion. If they win Walsh will be extremely smug.

For the first time since Katrina and the Waves brought the trophy home, regardless of the intervention of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Pete Waterman, it was looking as if the UK had finally found a winning formula with 'boy' band Blue, with the bookies listing them as second favourite in the past week, however they have now lengthened to third position just ahead of Azerbaijan. France is still the favourite with 'Sognu' sung by Amaury Vassili, which has maintained pole position from the outset.
The French, Irish and UK options could not be more different, highlighting the absurdity and delight of the Eurovision competition that had Terry Wogan and now Graham Norton tittering in the aisles. Vassilli sings with an accomplished tenor voice and appeals to those seeking balladic opus, Blue's offering 'I Can', is a reflection of contemporary catchy pop and Jedward is just mindless exhuberant fun that can often be alarmingly pallitible on a single outing. Either way Jedward and Blue will benefit from their exposure, especially the latter who are about to launch a comeback album, both will certainly be exhuberant with a win, although the Irish Premier may not be quite as excited at having to find the funds to stage next year's show in Dublin given the economic crisis.
From a betting point of view one of the best options could be taking up Paddy Power's offer of gambling on the final placing of the main contenders. Odds of 6/4 that the Uk will end up in the top four and 6/5 that Jedward will do the same look like good opportunities on the back of the feedback that is being received from European audiences.
