Another New Specials Market As The Voice Takes On The X Factor

Reality TV is clearly seen as a shrewd investment by many, not only are the bookmakers benefiting from the reams of new markets that have sprung up through interest in the genre, but the BBC have invested £22 million in the Dutch franchise, The Voice. Autumn schedules have been dominated by the battle between the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing and ITV's X Factor , but the beeb trumped the Simon Cowell juggernaut in the ratings war and now it seems they are ready to take him on in his own turf.

The Voice operates on the basis that everything is as its title suggests about The Voice and nothing more, this does not aim to be a star factory, which is why Christine Aguillera joined the judging panel in America on their version of the show. In fact in the States, The Voice has become more popular than the X Factor, a fact that the BBC will be seeking to mimic.

Whilst the X Factor become synonymous with acerbic criticism from the judges, in fact Simon Cowell almost made it an art form , and the cat fighting between mentors became a staple ingredient, The Voice is offering a more positive approach. None of the contestants are seen at the outset, the judges listen only to their voices, so that no decisions can be made on image or physique. This is clearly why Aguillera is interested and why the BBC's panel have been chosen.

The Paddy Power bet that is available now is which of the judges will mentor the winner and looking at the characters involved, they are completely different from Cowell's choices. Whilst Jessie J is a young star, at the other end of the spectrum the veteran singer Tom Jones will be competing with The Script's Danny O Donoghue and American will.i.am.

At the moment Jessie J is favourite at 7/4, but it would be foolish for any punter to underestimate Tom Jones potential. Over the decades he has moulded his voice with chart topping youngsters with unfailing success, so he not only possesses a powerful and unmistakable voice but he also knows how that can be used in a current sound. A price of 3/1 is sure to shorten as the programme unfolds.
