The bookmakers are having great fun with their specials/novelty markets at the moment with the imminent Royal Weddings in 2011. Prince William's marriage to Kate Middleton has spawned a host of books and Princess Anne's daughter Zara Phillips's wedding offers further opportunities. However, to add to the plethora of opportunities at the moment, the nearest to British Royalty in the world of celebrity the Beckhams , whose aspirations were first underlined by the thrones they had at their infamous wedding, have announced they are expecting their fourth child. Swiftly bookmakersPaddy Power have opened their Beckham Baby Name Odds with 'Sandra' given as the unlikely 10/1 favourite.
Unlike judging who will be William's best man or the colour of Kate Middleton's dress, guessing the name of the Beckham's child is a very challenging task, which is clearly why the favourite is at such long odds. To begin with there is the issue of the sex of the child. With three boys in the family the assumption is that the fourth child is more likely to be male, but this is a complete fallacy. Even an interview in the Guardian was recently written on the subject, on the back of Victoria's pregnancy, citing all the great obstetric brains in the country who reitterated the fact that every conception has equal chance of being a boy or a girl.
Royalty used to consume column inches in the newspapers, especially when Princess Diana was alive, but in the last decade the likes of the Beckhams and Cheryl Cole have certainly topped the publicity charts. Whilst often quoted as one of the pitfalls of fame and celebrity, the Beckhams have never shied away from the limelight. In fact in many ways they have courted attention and developed a money making brand on the back of exceptional PR. The Beckhams wedding was the first lavish celebrity wedding to be so extensively reported and being at the forefront of trends has been their strength. For precisely these reasons their sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz have unconventional and unexpected names. Tom, Sam and Ben were never going to appear on the birth certificates of Victoria's boys, although now they may feel it is time to buck their own trend and suprise the masses by choosing something more traditional.
Could Victoria really name a potential daughter Sandra after Beckhams mother? It seems highly unlikely for the self styled fashion guru, but the rest of the names offered by Paddy Power show little imagination. There is every opportunity to get a good price for a small wager in this market but the Beckhams will surely endeavour to shock everyone with their choice. Ferguson at 50/1, whilst recognizing Man United's manager's influence on the child's dad, seems a remote possibility. The Beckhams have not chosen to honour any close family or friends in the first names of any of their children, so even Pele at 500/1 looks like a bet worth leaving well alone!
