One of the most revered 1980's films is about to be remade and whilst its conception was 25 years ago, it is still intruiging that Studio Lionsgate is set firm to re do it. Bookmakers Paddy Power, always on the scent of a good story that will capture the interest of the media and subsequently the populace has opened a book on who will take the place of the late Patrick Swayze in the new movie.
There is shock that anyone is prepared to tamper with what became an iconic movie and many fans have cited their displeasure across the internet at the possibility, but interestingly the original female lead Jennifer Grey who played Frances "Baby" Houseman has voiced her support of the project via interview and twitter. Her enthusiasm for the audacious suggestion comes as a result of Lionsgate's chosen Director.
Kenny Ortega, who shot Michael Jackson's concert film,'This Is It' and the 'High School Musical' movies has been charged with the job largely because his CV includes choreographing most of the dance moves in the original film, which is why Jennifer Grey and many stalwart Dirty Dancing fans feel the project is in a safe pair of hands and could bring some updated magic to a whole new generation of youngsters.
Reputedly the unexpected move came on the back of the awareness that the Dirty Dancing Facebook page has more than nine million 'friends' which could be a misreading of the statstics. This proves after all that 9 million people are fans of the original, not that 9 million fans want a new movie. The choice of lead roles in the film will of course be crucial. Justin Timberlake is favourite at the moment at 3/1 and makes sense. He is of course a song and dance man and is building up his movie CV, but Swayze was not a super big name when he took the part, so a less well known figure might work better wiith new and old fans. Justin Bieber at 20/1 is lucky to get such short odds for the character requires a maturity and cynicism with a hint of street that is as far removed from Bieber's profile as is possible. Although Daniel Radcliffe is a 33/1 outsider it is not such an unreasonable suggestion. With reams of movie making experience under his belt and healthy reviews for his performance in Equs,as far from Harry Potter as you could get, he could just pull it off!
